KOOTHU

De documentaire Koothu (Tamil gesproken, Engels ondertiteld, regie Sandhya Kumar) wordt vertoond als benefietvoorstelling voor de Kattaikkuttu Sangam (in Tamil Nadu, Zuid-India). De Kattaikkuttu Sangam is een non-profit platform van en voor professionele Kattaikkuttu spelers. Het heeft als doel de positie van de acteurs te borgen en de emancipatie van vrouwelijke performers te versterken. Alle opbrengsten komen ten goede van de Kattaikkuttu Sangam. The documentary Koothu (Tamil spoken, English subtitled, directed by Sandhya Kumar) will be screened as a benefit presentation for the Kattaikkuttu Sangam (in Tamil Nadu, Southern India). The Kattaikkuttu Sangam is a non-profit platform by and for professional Kattaikkuttu actors. It aims to secure the position of actors and strengthen the emancipation of women performers. All proceeds will benefit the Kattaikkuttu Sangam. Programma / Program:

Over de film / About the film: In veel dorpen in Tamil Nadu (Zuid-India) verbindt een theatertraditie mensen nog steeds met een verleden. Nauw verbonden met religie en kastenrituelen, brengt Koothu (ook kattaikkuttu of therakuttu) verhalen tot leven over goden, halfgoden, koningen en demonen uit de Indiase heldendichten. Ondanks zijn aanhoudende populariteit op het platteland en vanwege zijn associaties met lage kasten, worstelt Koothu om plaats en bescherming te vinden in stedelijke kunstkringen. Wie creëert de grens tussen wat folk is en wat klassiek? Wie bepaalt wat grof is en wat geavanceerd? Aan de hand van het werk van twee Koothu-meesters, P. Rajagopal en Sambandan Thambiran, duikt de film Koothu in vragen over representatie en patronage van de kunstvorm, terwijl de kunst en esthetiek ervan worden gepresenteerd. Closely connected with religion and caste rituals, Koothu (also Kattaikkuttu or Therakuttu) brings to life stories about gods, demigods, kings, and demons from the Indian epics. In spite of its enduring rural popularity and because of its low-caste associations, Koothu struggles to find place and patronage in urban art circles. Who creates the binaries of folk and classical? Who decides what is crude and what is sophisticated? Through the work of two Koothu masters, P. Rajagopal, and Sambandan Thambiran, the film Koothu delves into questions of representation and patronage of the art form while presenting its art and aesthetics.
